Dresden, capital of the Free State of Saxony, is a vibrant city with a growing population. It boasts some of the world’s finest classical orchestras and art museums, including a collection of landscape paintings by the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. It is also a city of research and technology: the Technische Universität Dresden is one of only eleven "universities of excellence" in Germany.

The city is located in the river Elbe valley, close to the Elbe-Sandstone Mountains and the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge / Krušnohoří) on the Czech-German border. As well as the many famous buildings in the city centre, such as the Royal Castle with its famous "Green Vault" of treasures and the reconstructed Frauenkirche, many historic castles and gardens can be found in Dresden’s surroundings, for example at Pillnitz and Moritzburg.

The conference will be held at the Deutsche Hygiene-Museum, a museum and conference centre located in the city centre of Dresden.
